Knives sharpened for Arsene Wenger as fans get impatient
It has not been an enjoyable summer transfer window at all for Arsenal supporters
The transfer window has proved to be an uncomfortable time for Arsene Wenger, as the fans become increasingly restless and unforgiving towards what they see as a sequence of lies and financial mismanagement.
If this was backed up by good results, there is every chance that all would be forgiven, but defeat to Stoke followed by a 4-0 thumping by Liverpool has left the Gooners in unforgiving mood.
Unfortunately for Wenger, the worst could be yet to come, as we wait with bated breath to see how the final endgame in the transfer window pans out.
Last ditch ins and outs
Wenger has already incurred the wrath of many by what has been seen as a farcical situation surrounding Lucas Perez. Having signed the striker last year for £17.1m from Deportivo La Coruna, he is surely off to a new club for a fraction of the price. Loaning him back to Deportivo on a one year deal for around £4m is one option, although both Everton and Newcastle have shown interest in signing the Spaniard at the eleventh hour.
And what of Shkodran Mustafi? Those in the know have been saying for weeks that the German defender will be bound for Inter any day, but if this is true, they are leaving it mighty late to announce a deal.
Place your bets
The bookmakers’ odds on who will go where have been fluctuating wildly in the run up to deadline day, reflecting the madness in the air, but also representing an opportunity for the brave and knowledgeable to make a killing with the right call. This is particularly the case given the welcome offer for new Black Type players that has just been announced. For those who have not heard of it, Black Type is a new “no holds barred” betting site that operates without imposing limits or restrictions on big winners. A great opportunity for the best gamblers, but a gamble in itself for the operator!
So what odds are being offered on Mustafi, Perez and the rest? The odds on a Mustafi move are lengthening with every hour, amid rumours that Inter are unable to raise the necessary funds. Also a factor is a quote from Mustafi’s father that his boy is going nowhere.
As for Perez, the move to Deportivo seemed all but certain, but the Everton possibility has gained traction among bookmakers – they are offering odds of 7/2.
The will he or won’t he saga surrounding Alexis Sanchez is another that is nearing its conclusion, and surely Manchester City’s final offer of £60 million will prove to be enough. This leaves the question of who will replace him, and if a swap with Raheem Sterling is off the menu, the smart money is back on PSG’s Julian Draxler.
The proof of the pudding
In short time, the music will stop and everyone will take a seat. But while the likes of Jurgen Klopp will be able to sit back with a satisfied sigh, for Wenger the battle will only be beginning.
No matter how the dust settles, he will only regain the support of the Arsenal faithful one way – with results out in the middle.
