Steven Gerrard sends message to Arsenal fans about new signing
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard issues his backing for Arsenal's club-record signing Alexandre Lacazette
Steven Gerrard has issued his backing for Arsenal’s new signing Alexandre Lacazette after his encouraging performance in the Community Shield.
The France international made his first competitive start for the north London side since completing a club-record £52m move from Ligue 1 side Lyon last month.
The Gunners striker had one shot on target during the Wembley clash as the 26-year-old hit the woodwork in the first half against Premier League champions Chelsea.
The Blues broke the deadlock in the 46th minute before Lacazette was replaced by his compatriot Olivier Giroud in the 66th minute at the home of English football.
Arsenal summer signing Kolasinac levelled with eight minutes remaining before Giroud dispatched the winning spot-kick in the penalty shootout at Wembley.
Former Liverpool captain Gerrard was impressed with Lacazette’s debut performance against the defending champions in the Community Shield.
“He looked really lively and sharp,” Gerrard told BT Sport on Sunday afternoon.
“He looks like a quality player. He looks like an Arsenal player.”
Lacazette was Arsenal’s second summer signing after the north London side snapped up Kolasinac in a free transfer from Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04.
The Gunners finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season to finish behind Gerrard’s former club Liverpool.
Arsene Wenger’s side are facing the prospect of their first season in Europe’s second tier competition the Europa League.
