The Arsenal manager admits he is unsure whether Alexis Sanchez will sign a new deal at the north London club
Arsene Wenger admits he is unsure whether Alexis Sanchez will sign a new contract with Arsenal.
The Gunners forward is facing an uncertain future at the Emirates Stadium after Sanchez entered the final 12 months of his deal.
Sanchez will be available to sign on a free transfer next summer if Arsenal are unable to convince the 28-year-old to extend his stay at the club.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is thought to be keen on signing the former Barcelona forward to further strengthen his attacking options ahead of the new season.
The Chile international has also been named as a target for Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain and Serie A champions Juventus.
Sanchez sat out Arsenal’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Leicester City in their Premier League opener at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night.
Gunners boss Wenger admitted that he is unable to shed light on Sanchez’s plans because the transfer saga hasn’t progressed.
“Look, at the moment no, because we have not progressed on that front,” Wenger told his pre-match media conference on Wednesday morning when asked if Sanchez could sign a new Arsenal deal.
“At the moment he is a player who goes into the final year of his contract and prepares for the season.
“We have not made any progress on the other front.”
Sanchez scored 24 goals in 37 games in the Premier League last season to finish as Arsenal’s top goal-scorer in the top flight.
The South American forward moved to Arsenal in a £35m deal from La Liga giants Barcelona in the 2014 summer transfer window.
