Frank Lampard: Arsenal need key signing to challenge for the title
Chelsea legend Frank Lampard believes Arsenal need to sign a top defensive midfielder to win the Premier League title
Frank Lampard has warned Arsene Wenger that Arsenal won’t win the Premier League title until the manager signs a commanding midfielder.
The Gunners boss has been rebuilding his squad in the summer transfer window following a disappointing fifth-place finish in the Premier League table last season.
Arsenal, though, have been lacking a midfielder enforcer since France legend Patrick Vieira left the north London club to move to Juventus in 2005.
Wenger signed Granit Xhaka in a £33m deal from Borussia Monchengladbach last summer to rival Mohamed Elneny and Francis Coquelin in a holding role.
However, the Switzerland international struggled to adjust to the Premier League last term and the 23-year-old was criticised for his reckless performances.
Arsenal signed Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette in a £52m deal after the arrival of Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac in a free transfer from Schalke 04.
The Gunners beat Premier League champions Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley thanks to a 3-1 triumph on penalties following a 1-1 draw in normal time.
Former Chelsea midfielder Lampard has urged Arsenal to sign a commanding defensive-minded midfielder to transform Wenger’s team into genuine title contenders.
Lampard told BT Sport: “Wenger’s never really addressed that midfield enforcement [position] in recent years and I think until they get that man, I don’t think they’re going to be able to stay the course.
“That’s been the story with Arsenal in recent years.”
Arsenal won their third FA Cup in four seasons last May thanks to a 2-1 victory over Premier League champions Chelsea.
