Charlie Nicolas sends message to Arsene Wenger about Arsenal signings
The Arsenal legend questions Arsene Wenger about his lack of defensive reinforcements in the summer transfer window
Charlie Nicholas has criticised Arsene Wenger for failing to address Arsenal’s defensive problems in the summer transfer window.
The Gunners finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a Champions League spot for the first time under Wenger.
The north London side crashed out of the Champions League after a 10-2 loss to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the round of last 16.
Wenger’s blushes were somewhat spared when Arsenal were 2-1 winners against Premier League champions Chelsea to secure their third FA Cup trophy in four seasons.
Arsenal were criticised for their defensive issues last season, conceding more goals than Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United.
The Gunners boss has signed Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac to improve his left-back options but questions remain about the centre of his defence.
Former Arsenal playmaker Nicholas is still concerned about Wenger’s defence ahead of the start of the 2017-18 Premier League season.
Nicholas told Sky Sports:
“Wenger is caught in a difficult place because he’s such a loyal guy and, while I have no issue with him being prudent, he said he would analyse it all at the end of the campaign but he’s still not addressed the defensive issues.
“I stand by what I said last season, they don’t have the best XI, maybe not the best 15, but the squad is among the best around.”
Arsenal spent a club-record £52m fee on France striker Alexandre Lacazette from Ligue 1 side Lyon.
The north London side haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 and have never lifted the Champions League.
But the Gunners kicked off the season with a victory as they beat Chelsea on penalties in the Community Shield on Sunday afternoon.
