Arsene Wenger told Arsenal need to make signings in two key positions
Arsenal still need to sign a centre-half and a central midfielder in the summer transfer window, Gilberto Silva claims
Arsenal still need to sign a centre-half and a central midfielder before the close of the summer transfer window, Gilberto Silva says.
The Gunners lost 1-0 to Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday evening to prompt fresh criticism of Arsene Wenger’s team.
Arsenal were unconvincing 4-3 winners against 2016 champions Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium in their Premier League opener.
The north London side spent a club-record £52m fee on Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette to bolster their attacking options.
The Gunners have also recruited Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac in a free transfer from Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04.
However, Arsenal don’t appear to have made major progress over the summer months following a fifth-place finish last term.
Former Gunners midfielder Silva believes Wenger needs to make two more additions before transfer deadline day.
“The season has barely started so are yet to see if something is lacking from the side, if they are strong enough or need new additions,” said Silva, speaking exclusively to 888sport.
“This is always the big question. Gabriel has now gone so it would be nice to bring in a new central defender and maybe a new centre midfielder too. That is up to the manager, but of course he has to act quickly because the window closes in a few days.”
Arsenal beat Chelsea on penalties to win the Community Shield at Wembley earlier this month.
The Gunners were 2-1 winners against the Premier League champions in the FA Cup final last May to win the competition for the third time in four seasons.
The north London side haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 since Silva was part of Wenger’s famous unbeaten team.
