Ian Wright names the two signings Arsenal need to win the title
The Gunners legend names two players that could have transformed Arsenal into Premier League champions
Ian Wright believes Arsenal would win the Premier League title if Arsene Wenger signed Nemanja Matic and Virgil van Dijk.
The Gunners boss signed a new contract with the north London side this summer despite leading Arsenal to a disappointing fifth-place finish last term.
Wenger hasn’t won the title since 2003-04 when club legends such as Thierry Henry, Robert Pires and Patrick Vieira were instrumental in an unprecedented unbeaten Premier League season.
Arsenal signed Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac in a free transfer from Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 in June to improve their options at centre-half and left-back.
The FA Cup holders spent a club-record £52m fee on France international Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon to give the Gunners more potency in attack.
However, Wenger has been criticised for failing to recruit a centre-half or a commanding midfielder to strengthen to obvious weaknesses in the Arsenal team.
Former Arsenal striker Wright questioned why the north London side didn’t show any interest in Manchester United signing Matic and aren’t pursuing want-away Southampton defender Van Dijk.
“Two signings in the right position for Arsenal. Two strong players in the dressing room, like Van Dijk and Matic, [would help] Arsenal to win the title,” Wright told BBC Radio 5 Live.
Manchester United signed Matic in a £50m deal from Premier League champions Chelsea last week as Jose Mourinho improved his midfield options ahead of the 2017-18 season.
