The Liverpool legend was critical of Hugo Lloris after Marcos Alonso's late winner in Chelsea's 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur
Michael Owen criticised Hugo Lloris for his role in Chelsea’s winner after Marcos Alonso’s late goal secured a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley.
Spurs welcomed the Premier League champions in their first top-flight fixture since relocating to Wembley while their new stadium is being built.
Tottenham were favourites heading into the top-flight clash after Chelsea suffered a 3-2 loss to Burnley before Spurs were 2-0 winners against Newcastle United on the opening weekend.
However, Spanish full-back Alonso broke the deadlock with a sumptuous free-kick before half-time before Chelsea sat back in the second half looking to defend their lead.
Tottenham were level in 82nd minute after Michy Batshuayi scored an own goal but Alonso restored Chelsea’s lead with two minutes of normal time remaining thanks to a close-range finish past Lloris.
Former Liverpool and Manchester United striker Owen was critical of the Tottenham goalkeeper for his role in Chelsea’s winner at Wembley.
Owen wrote on Twitter: “Unbelievable finish at Wembley. Could have gone either way. Loris has to save that winning goal with his right foot. #TOTCHE”
Chelsea moved up to eleventh place in the Premier League table and two spots behind Tottenham Hotspur.
The Blues signed four players in the summer transfer window but sold Nemanja Matic to title rivals Manchester United in a £40m deal.
The Premier League champions will take on Everton at Stamford Bridge in their next game on Sunday.
