Mark Lawrenson states his prediction for Chelsea v Everton
Former Liverpool defender is backing Chelsea to ease to a 2-0 win against Everton at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon
Mark Lawrenson is backing Chelsea to end Everton’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
The defending champions made a conspicuous start to the new campaign after a surprise 3-2 loss to Burnley in west London in their Premier League opener.
Chelsea paid a heavy price for their defeat after Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas were both sent off to earn suspensions for the trip to Tottenham Hotspur.
However, Antonio Conte’s side-stepped up the mark with a 2-1 win against their title rivals at Wembley thanks to Marcos Alonso’s goals either side of half-time.
Everton, meanwhile, drew 1-1 with Manchester City at The Etihad on Monday night following a 1-0 victory over Stoke City in their first game of the 2017-18 campaign.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson believes the Premier League champions will beat Everton despite the Toffees’ impressive form in recent weeks.
“After losing their opening game at home to Burnley, Chelsea were excellent against Tottenham last weekend, winning 2-1 at Wembley,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“It was like a set of good players saying to themselves ‘what was that all about last weekend?’ They have some very, very good players and won the league last year at a canter.
“Everybody was ready to say ‘played two, lost two, what is manager Antonio Conte going to say?’ and wonder whether he was going to leave the club. But it was a big win for them and I expect them to win again this weekend.
“Everton have made a really good start. Everything about it has been impressive. The only thing is that, at the moment, Wayne Rooney is the only one who looks like he is going to score.
“Everybody knows they are looking for a striker, it is just a case of who they can get in. But they have a good manager and have made good signings already.
“They got battered 5-0 at Chelsea last season and while I don’t expect that to happen again, I do think they’ll lose.”
Chelsea were 5-0 winners against Everton at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League last season to help propel their title challenge.
The west London side have signed four players in the summer transfer window as Conte looks to prepare his Blues squad for a return to the Champions League.
The Blues will take on AS Roma, Atletico Madrid and Qarabag in the Champions League group stage with a place in the last 16 up for grabs.
