Pat Nevin compares Chelsea signing to Liverpool legend
The former Chelsea winger can see similarities between Alvaro Morata and Liverpool legend John Aldridge and Kenny Dalglish
Pat Nevin has likened Chelsea signing Alvaro Morata to Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish.
The Premier League champions completed a £58m deal to sign the Spain international from La Liga giants Real Madrid earlier in the summer transfer window.
However, Morata wasn’t thought to be Antonio Conte’s first-choice signing but Chelsea turned to the ex-Juventus man after missing out on Romelu Lukaku.
The 24-year-old made a disappointing start to life at Stamford Bridge after the summer signing missed his spot-kick in a penalty shootout loss to Arsenal in the Community Shield.
Morata was named on the bench for Chelsea’s Premier League opener last weekend but Conte turned to the striker with the champions trailing 3-0 at home to Burnley.
The former Madrid star scored a close-range header to offer hope of a comeback before he teed up David Luiz to score a late consolation goal in a 3-2 loss.
Former Chelsea and Everton winger Nevin believes there are similarities between Morata’s style of play and that of Liverpool great Dalglish.
“Morata is adaptable. I’d have him every day of the week,” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“He has the power, he has the natural finishing instinct and he has the movement as well.
“The ones who have mega-intelligence but have the other stuff as well… there are not a lot of them about. Like Kenny Dalglish and John Aldridge.”
Chelsea won the Premier League title in their first season under the management of Conte.
The Blues finished seven points clear of their closest challengers Tottenham Hotspur but lost 2-1 to Arsenal in the FA Cup final.
