Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink sends message to Man United fans about Chelsea signing
The former Chelsea striker was disappointed to see Nemanja Matic move to Manchester United this summer
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has admitted that he was disappointed to see Chelsea sell Nemanja Matic move to Manchester United this summer.
The Red Devils secured a remarkable £40m deal to sign the Serbia international from the Premier League champions earlier this month to address an area of weakness in Jose Mourinho’s team.
Matic was part of Mourinho’s title-winning side in the 2014-15 season as the 29-year-old formed an impressive midfield partnership with Spain international Cesc Fabregas.
The Serb played a key role in Chelsea’s Premier League title success last term under Antonio Conte following the Italian’s appointment last summer.
The Blues signed French midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko in a £40m deal from Ligue 1 title holders AS Monaco last month to improve their midfield options.
Chelsea manager Conte has revealed that he didn’t want the defensive midfielder to leave the west London club this summer.
Former Chelsea striker Hasselbaink admitted that he was very disappointed to see Matic move to Manchester United.
“I was disappointed to see him [Matic] go, I like him a lot as he gives you a balance,” Hasselbaink told Sky Sports News on Monday.
“He will be a very, very important player for [Paul] Pogba, he will give him that licence to be creative.
“Matic will be happy to do the defending and to protect the back four. To see him at United, what a signing for Mourinho, he’s done magnificently to convince him to join.”
Matic was named man of the match following an impressive performance in Manchester United’s 4-0 victory over West Ham in their Premier League opener at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils are sitting at the top of the Premier League table.
