The Red Devils have invested heavily in new playing staff in the summer transfer window as Jose Mourinho looks to close the gap on defending champions Chelsea.
Manchester United recruited Sweden international Victor Lindelof to improve their centre-half options following an injury crisis at the back last term.
The Red Devils have also signed Everton striker Romelu Lukaku in a £75m deal from Everton after seeing off competition from Chelsea.
Mourinho even managed to sign Serbia international Nemanja Matic from the Premier League champions to bolster his defensive midfield options.
Speaking to ESPN FC about Manchester United’s chances of winning the title this season, former Liverpool defender Nicol backed Chelsea and Spurs to finish ahead of Mourinho’s men.
“Chelsea and Man City are ahead of Man United,” Nicol said.
“Spurs can’t be counted out. Man United are definitely top four [contenders] but not one of the favourites for the Premier League.”
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season.
The Red Devils managed to win the EFL Cup and the Europa League to finish the campaign on a positive note.
Manchester United will take on Champions League holders Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup on Tuesday night.
