Paul Ince explains why Chelsea won’t miss Man United signing
The Manchester United legend doesn't believe Nemanja Matic's sale is a big blow to Chelsea
Paul Ince has rubbished claims that Chelsea’s decision to sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United has handed the title to their rivals.
The Premier League champions made the decision to sell the Serbia international to the Red Devils in a £40m deal last week.
Matic was a key member of the Chelsea team that won the Premier League title under Jose Mourinho in the 2014-15 season.
The 29-year-old was a regular in Antonio Conte’s starting XI last term as Chelsea won the top-flight crown with two games to spare.
The Blues signed French midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko in a £40m deal to provide more competition in midfield ahead of the new campaign.
Former Manchester United midfielder Ince rubbished claims that Matic’s departure is a big blow to Chelsea’s title prospects.
“Some people have said that they can’t believe Chelsea let Matic go to United, and that they’ve handed them the title, but I don’t see that,” Ince told Paddy Power.
“Towards the back end of last season, he couldn’t get in their team.
“So I don’t think he’ll be a huge loss to them, but he’s still a very good player to sit in front of the back four, do the simple things, pass the ball – he’s good at what he does.”
Chelsea won the Premier League title last term after finishing seven points clear of their closest rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
The Blues have signed Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero, AS Roma defender Antonio Rudiger, Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata and Monaco star Bakayoko so far this summer.
The west London side suffered a penalty shootout defeat by Arsenal in the Community Shield last weekend after Thibaut Courtois and Alvaro Morata missed their spot-kicks.
