Steven Gerrard voices his concerns about Chelsea after Burnley loss
Steven Gerrard admits he is worried about the overall atmosphere at Chelsea after their poor start to the season
Steven Gerrard has admitted that he is worried about the overall atmosphere at Chelsea after their shock defeat by Burnley on Saturday.
The Blues endured an opening day to forget as they were reduced to nine men and ended up slumping to a surprise 3-2 loss to the Clarets in front of their home fans in west London.
Chelsea are aiming to defend their Premier League title this season while also mounting a challenge for the Champions League crown after missing out on a spot in Europe last term.
However, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte appears to be far from happy with the club’s summer transfer business so far.
And former Liverpool captain Gerrard feels that Conte is clearly not pleased with the way his squad have headed into the new Premier League season.
Speaking on Premier League Tonight on BT Sport on Saturday night, Gerrard said: “It just seems to me that there is friction behind the scenes [at Chelsea].
“You wonder whether all of those decisions, loans and players moving on, have been decisions that have been taken out of Conte’s hands and that’s why he’s frustrated.
“We see a lot of emotion from him on the sidelines, which is great, but that’s the first time I’ve seen him really upset and emotional in a press conference.
“He’s usually calm and speaks really well.”
Chelsea must now dust themselves down and get ready for their crunch clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley next weekend.
The Blues, who have signed four players so far this summer, will make a return to the group stage of the Champions League next month.
