Thierry Henry backs new Chelsea signing to replace Diego Costa
Arsenal legend Thierry Henry believes Alvaro Morata can replace Diego Costa in the Chelsea team
Thierry Henry believes Alvaro Morata can replace Chelsea striker Diego Costa in Antonio Conte’s team.
The Premier League champions signed the Spain international in a £58m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.
Morata will be tasked with emulating controversial but prolific striker Costa in the 2017-18 Premier League season.
The 24-year-old scored 15 times in 26 appearances in La Liga last season but struggled to tie down a regular starting spot in Zinedine Zidane’s team.
The former Juventus star will be an automatic starter in the Chelsea side and will be under pressure to match Costa’s contributions in their title-winning seasons.
Arsenal legend Henry is confident that Morata is capable of filling the void left in the Chelsea team should his compatriot complete his summer exit.
“He will need to get used to the Premier League but then he will perform,” Henry told Sky Sports.
“I’m very excited about him. It’s a heavy task to come after Diego Costa but someone has to do it.
“Someone had to do it after Didier Drogba, someone had to do it after Gianfranco Zola. That’s the way it is.
“When you look at Morata’s numbers you know the guy can score goals. I like him and I hope it works out.”
Costa has been linked with a move to former club Atletico Madrid or Italian giants AC Milan in the 2017 summer transfer window so far.
The Blues won the Premier League title in 2015 and 2017 with Costa leading their attack.
The Brazilian-born forward moved to Chelsea in a £32m deal from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid in 2014.
Chelsea won the Premier League title in their first season under the management of Antonio Conte last term.
