Mauricio Pochettino reveals what new Chelsea signing said about potential Tottenham move
Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino reveals Alvaro Morata was reluctant to consider a move to Spurs because of Harry Kane
Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that new Chelsea signing Alvaro Morata was reluctant to consider a move to Tottenham Hotspur because of Harry Kane.
The Premier League champions signed Morata in a £58m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid last month to bolster Antonio Conte’s attacking options.
Chelsea were initially linked with a move to re-sign Romelu Lukaku but the Belgium striker opted to complete a £75m transfer to Manchester United.
Tottenham have struggled to recruit new players in the summer transfer window so far despite finishing in second place in the Premier League table last term.
Morata was initially linked with a potential move to Spurs before the Spain international completed a switch to Stamford Bridge.
Tottenham manager Pochettino revealed that Morata wasn’t keen on a move to White Hart Lane given Kane is already leading the Tottenham line.
Pochettino said: “It’s so difficult to convince good players to come and then be on the bench. Then the problems start. ‘Morata said to me, “Why do you want me if you have Harry Kane?”. You know, if you go to try to sign a striker, they will say, “Eh gaffer, you want me for what? To be on the bench? Because it’s Harry Kane, I can’t compete with Harry Kane” or Hugo Lloris or different players.
“Our fans know that we are not a club today that can compete with Manchester United and City for a player. We cannot fight.”
Kane scored 29 goals in 31 games in the Premier League last season to finish as the division’s leading goal-scorer.
The England international has netted 78 times in 113 appearances in the English top flight since breaking into the Tottenham team.
