Pat Nevin sends positive message to Chelsea fans about Alvaro Morata
The former Chelsea midfielder is impressed with Antonio Conte's summer signing
Pat Nevin has heaped praise on Chelsea’s “fantastic” Alvaro Morata for bouncing back from a tough start at Stamford Bridge.
The Premier League champions were initially linked with a move to sign Belgium international Romelu Lukaku in a big-money deal from Everton.
However, Manchester United managed to hijack a deal to bring in the 24-year-old striker and leave Chelsea without their top target.
The west London side turned to Morata and the Spain international moved to the defending champions in a £58m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid.
However, the former Juventus striker made a disappointing start to his Blues career after missing his spot-kick in a penalty shootout defeat by Arsenal in the Community Shield.
Morata, though, almost helped Chelsea to overturn a 3-0 deficit in their Premier League opener last weekend after the summer signing scored a well-taken header before teeing up David Luiz in a 3-2 loss to Burnley.
Former Chelsea winger Nevin was impressed with Morata’s performance on his Premier League debut in difficult circumstances.
“Morata came on and the whole thing changed,” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Tottenham on Sunday.
“It wasn’t just because he lifted it because he’s a good player.
‘Now Chelsea were able to play. He could link up play.”
Nevin added: “The best thing was he was getting pelters after the Community Shield. He was getting hammered.”
“I was watching [Burnley game] and I thought his movement was fantastic.”
Morata scored 15 times in 26 games in La Liga for Real Madrid last season but struggled to secure a regular first-team spot under Zinedine Zidane.
