The Chelsea midfielder is facing increased competition for places after Antonio Conte signed the French midfielder in a £40m deal from Ligue 1 champions AS Monaco.
Fabregas was initially out-of-favour under Conte following the Italian coach’s appointment in 2016 as Jose Mourinho’s permanent successor at the west London club.
However, to his credit, the Spain international managed to fight his way back into first-team contention throughout the 2016-17 campaign.
The 29-year-old ended up with five goals and 12 assists in 13 starts and 16 substitute appearances in the Premier League to help Conte win the title in his first season in England.
Fabregas’ midfield partner Nemanja Matic has been sold to their bitter rivals Manchester United in a £40m deal to prompt talk of Chelsea signing a replacement for the Serbia international.
However, Arsenal legend Merson believes Fabregas will have a big role to play in the Chelsea team irrespective of summer signings.
“They’ve got N’Golo Kante and Tiemoue Bakayoko in midfield but I think he needs Cesc Fabregas in there to make things happen,” Merson told Sky Sports.
Fabregas moved to Chelsea from La Liga giants Barcelona in a £27m deal in the 2014 summer transfer window.
The Spain international has won two Premier League titles and the EFL Cup since moving to Stamford Bridge.
