Liverpool and Chelsea could battle for signature of top 26-year-old – report
Chelsea are still hoping to pip Liverpool to the signature of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this summer, say reports
Chelsea are hopeful that they would be able to persuade Virgil van Dijk to sign for them ahead of Liverpool this summer, according to reports in the British media.
The Evening Standard is reporting that the Blues are hoping that Southampton will choose to negotiate with them rather than Liverpool about the possibility of signing Van Dijk this summer.
The 26-year-old defender has long been linked with a move away from St Mary’s this summer and Liverpool are thought to be the Dutchman’s preferred destination.
However, Chelsea could be set to try and make a move for Van Dijk after Liverpool’s public failed pursuit of the defender back in June.
The same story claims that Van Dijk has been on Chelsea’s list of transfer targets since December as Antonio Conte looks to try and strengthen his rearguard ahead of the new campaign.
The article also says that Van Dijk is still trying to force a transfer away from Southampton this summer, but it is suggested that Anfield would still be his preferred destination.
Chelsea have already signed one new defender this summer after wrapping up a deal to land Antonio Rudiger from Roma last month.
