Jamie Carragher sends message to Chelsea fans about Man United signing
Jamie Carragher admits he was surprised that Chelsea opted to sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United
Jamie Carragher has admitted that he was very surprised to see Chelsea sanction the sale of Nemanja Matic to rivals Manchester United.
The 29-year-old midfielder signed for the Red Devils last week as Jose Mourinho strengthened his midfield options at Old Trafford ahead of his second campaign in charge.
The deal raised some eyebrows, as many questioned why the west London side were willing to part company with Matic and let him move to a direct Premier League rival.
Chelsea let Matic leave only after they had brought in Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, but the Frenchman has yet to prove himself in the Premier League.
Liverpool legend Carragher things that Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was not happy about the club’s decision to sell Matic to Manchester United.
Speaking on The Debate on Sky Sports on Monday Night, Carragher said: “The Matic deal is a perfect example. If you’re a manager why would you want to let him go – especially to a rival?
“But they’ll be saying ‘£45m for a 29-year-old and we’ve got a replacement who is 22’. We don’t know how good [Bakayoko] is going to be, but that has been their business model going forward.
“The success they’ve in changing manager means they’re not going to take anything like that off Conte.
“They got rid of Mourinho, they got rid of Ancelotti and I would be very surprised if he’s here in 12 months.”
Chelsea lost on penalties to Arsenal on Sunday as they missed the chance to win their first trophy of the season with the Community Shield.
The west London side are now preparing for their Premier League opener against Burnley this weekend as they look to get their title defence off to a winning start in front of their home fans at Stamford Bridge.
