Gary Neville sends message to Chelsea about Man United signing
Gary Neville admits that he was surprised to see Chelsea agree to sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United this summer
Gary Neville has described Chelsea’s decision to sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United as a “strange one” after the midfielder’s switch last week.
The Blues opted to let the 29-year-old midfielder leave Stamford Bridge to sign for their direct Premier League rivals after Chelsea completed the signing of Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco earlier this summer.
The transfer has raised eyebrows amongst many fans and pundits alike, given that the Serbian played a key role in helping Chelsea to win the Premier League title next season.
And former Manchester United defender Neville is convinced that Antonio Conte did not sanction the move to sell Matic, and that it was approved by the club’s hierarchy.
Speaking to Sky Sports News on Wednesday morning, Neville said: “There’s no doubt that he [Conte] has not sanctioned that move [Manchester United signing Matic]. He’s not happy with it and ultimately he’s uncomfortable with it.
“I have to say, it’s a strange move, it really is – to sell to one of your main rivals…”
Matic made his competitive debut for Manchester United on Tuesday night when he started the Red Devils’ 2-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup in Macedonia.
The Serb will once again be hoping to line up for the Red Devils when they take on West Ham United in their Premier League season opener at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League last season, while Chelsea were crowned Champions in Conte’s first campaign in charge.
