Martin Keown sends message to Chelsea fans about Man United signing
The Arsenal legend believes Chelsea could rue missing out on Manchester United signing Romelu Lukaku
Martin Keown believes Chelsea could regret missing out on signing Romelu Lukaku.
The Blues were in the hunt to sign the Belgium international but Manchester United managed to swoop in and complete a £75m deal for the 24-year-old striker.
Antonio Conte told Diego Costa earlier this summer that he is free to leave the Premier League champions this summer despite the controversial striker scored 20 times in their title-winning campaign.
With Lukaku moving to their direct title rivals Manchester United, Conte opted to sign Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata in a £58m deal last month.
The Spain international made a disappointing start to his Chelsea career after he missed his spot-kick in their penalty shootout loss to Arsenal in the Community Shield.
Former Arsenal defender Keown questioned whether Conte could rue missing out Lukaku, especially if Costa leaves the English champions as anticipated.
“You cannot tell me Chelsea’s first XI is stronger without Diego Costa,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“Alvaro Morata averaged a goal every 88 minutes in La Liga last year but there is a feeling Chelsea missed out on their man in Romelu Lukaku. Conte has had to prove he is the top dog in the dressing room but by axing Costa he has put himself under more pressure.”
Lukaku scored 25 times in 36 games in the Premier League last season.
Only Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane scored more goals than Lukaku in the English top flight last term.
