Jamie Carragher: My big issue about Chelsea selling Nemanja Matic to Man United
The former Liverpool defender can't understand why Chelsea decided to sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United
Jamie Carragher has admitted that his biggest issue with Chelsea’s decision to sell Nemanja Matic is that the midfielder moved to a direct title rival.
The Premier League champions signed French defensive midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko in a £40m deal from Ligue 1 champions AS Monaco last month.
Bakayoko’s arrival meant increased competition for places at Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2017-18 Premier League season.
However, Chelsea made the bizarre decision to sell Matic to title rivals Manchester United in a £40m transfer deal earlier this month.
The Serbia international has wasted no time having a big impact on his new team following man of the match performances against Real Madrid and West Ham.
Chelsea, on the other hand, struggled without their powerful midfiedler as the Blues suffered a surprise 3-2 loss to Burnley in their Premier League opener on Saturday.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher admitted that he was surprised to see the defending champions sell Matic to Manchester United.
“My one big issue with Chelsea is selling to a rival,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“I can’t understand why you would do that – strengthen a rival.”
Chelsea have also signed Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero, Roma defender Antonio Rudiger and Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata in the summer transfer window.
Manchester United, meanwhile, have added Benfica defender Victor Lindelof and Everton striker Romelu Lukaku before Matic sealed his move.
