Ian Wright sends clear warning to new Chelsea signing
Ian Wright issues a blunt warning to Tiemoue Bakayoko after his arrival at Chelsea from Monaco this summer
Ian Wright has warned Tiemoue Bakayoko that he will have to hit the ground running at Chelsea this season following his transfer to the club from Monaco.
The French midfielder became the west London side’s third signing of the summer last month when he left Monaco to join the Premier League champions.
Bakayoko is generally seen as a like-for-like replacement for Nemanja Matic, who was sold to Manchester United last week.
However, the 22-year-old is unproven in the Premier League and is still shaking off a minor knee injury as he bids to be fit for the new campaign.
And Arsenal legend Wright has warned that Bakayoko will need to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League as quickly as possible as Chelsea prepare to kick off their title defence this weekend.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Wright said: “They have signed Bakayoko from Monaco to replace Matic, but he has to come in and hit the ground running because Chelsea want to go far in the Champions League and defend the Premier League trophy.
“They are getting rid of players who are experienced and from who you know exactly what you’re going to get.”
Wright added: “Right now Chelsea are in a worse position than last year.”
Chelsea were beaten by Arsenal on penalties on Sunday in the Community Shield at Wembley.
The west London side are preparing for a return to the Champions League this season after they missed out on a spot in Europe in the 2016-17 campaign following their disastrous 10th-placed finish in the Premier League the season before.
