Phil Thompson is tipping Manchester United to finish second and Chelsea to finish fourth in the Premier League table this season.

The Liverpool legend was asked for his predictions for the Premier League table ahead of the kick off of the 2017-18 campaign and he selected Manchester City as champions, with Liverpool in third place.

Manchester United will be desperately hoping to improve their Premier League form this season after the disappointment of their sixth-placed finish in the top flight last term.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are aiming to defend their Premier League title after they triumphed in style under Antonio Conte last season.

However, Thompson is tipping Manchester City to finish ahead of Manchester United, Liverpool and then Chelsea.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Thompson said: “I hate giving my predictions before the transfer window shuts.

“I was going to put Chelsea in second but I don’t think they’ve strengthened enough yet. I’m a bit concerned because Antonio Conte’s body language is implying he’s being pushed to then limit and I think he will be very, very upset, the same as Rafael Benitez.

“I’ve been really pleased with how Liverpool have shaped up in pre-season and Mohamed Salah has been quite incredible. He gives us that pace as well as Sadio Mane.”

Manchester United are set to kick off their Premier League campaign with a home clash against West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are due to take on Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Saturday as they look to begin their Premier League title defence with three points.

Liverpool tackle Watford at Vicarage Road in the lunchtime kick-off on Saturday afternoon as they also look to make a positive start to the campaign.
