Gary Neville reacts to Marcos Alonso’s display in Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Tottenham
Gary Neville praises Marcos Alonso after Chelsea's 2-1 win over Tottenham at Wembley
Gary Neville lavished praise on Marcos Alonso after the Spaniard’s two goals fired Chelsea to a 2-1 win over Tottenham at Wembley.
Alonso gave Chelsea, who headed into the game on the back of their shock 3-2 loss to Burnley last week, the lead midway through the first half with a sublime left-footed free-kick.
However, Tottenham grew into the game and levelled in the 82nd minute when Michy Batshuayi inadvertently diverted the ball past Thibaut Courtois from a Christian Eriksen free-kick.
But Chelsea took the lead once again in the 88th minute when Alonso burst through on goal and poked a finish past Hugo Lloris in the Tottenham goal to wrap up the three points for the Blues.
Speaking during Sky Sports‘ coverage of the game, Neville first heaped praise on Alonso for his free-kick.
Neville said: “It was absolutely brilliant from Alonso. It was absolutely fantastic. It’s a big Tottenham wall… Alderweireld, Wanyama, Kane, Alli… but it’s absolutely brilliant.”
And then after Alonso had scored the winner at Wembley, Neville added: “That is a famous goal for that man.
“The bit of play from David Luiz is fantastic, as soon as he wins it back, credit to Alonso, he’s off.
“He just hits it across into the far corner. It’s poor goalkeeping, he’s got to save it. You cannot let that go in at the near post.
“But for Chelsea, what a moment.”
The victory was a welcome one for Chelsea, who now turn their attentions towards their home clash against Everton at Stamford Bridge next weekend.
The west London side are preparing for a return to the Champions League next month.
