The Blues have been heavily linked with a move to bring the 27-year-old England international to Stamford Bridge this summer as Antonio Conte looks to bolster his squad ahead of his side’s return to the Champions League next month.
Chelsea are believed to be on the lookout for midfield reinforcements after the Blues opted to make the surprise decision to sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United this month.
And former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Given feels that Drinkwater would be the perfect man to line up in midfield alongside the likes of N’Golo Kante.
Speaking to Sky Sports News on Thursday morning, Given said: “Drinkwater two seasons ago won the league, with Kante in midfield being a big part of that.
“Conte is maybe looking to get him in because that partnership worked very well at Leicester.
“You can see that happening, now they have lost Matic to Manchester United.
“They need a player who is not so much a flair player but one who sit’s in front of the back four, or back three and break things up. Drinkwater would fit that category perfectly.”
Chelsea are currently preparing to host Everton at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon as they look to build on their 2-1 win over Tottenham last weekend.
It remains to be seen whether Conte will be able to bring in any more players before the close of the transfer window at the end of the month.
The Blues have signed Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Alvaro Morata so far this summer.
