Ex-goalkeeper believes top 24-year-old will be tempted by Chelsea move
Shay Given believes Arsenal star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be tempted by Chelsea's interest in the England international
Shay Given believes Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be tempted by the idea of swapping Arsenal for Chelsea this summer.
The England international’s future has been a source of relentless debate in the current transfer window so far despite Oxlade-Chamberlain starting both of Arsenal’s Premier League games in the new season.
The 23-year-old midfielder has entered the final 12 months of his Arsenal contract to throw up the possibility of the England international leaving on a free transfer next summer.
Premier League champions Chelsea have been heavily linked with a move to sign the Arsenal star before next week’s transfer deadline day to improve his squad options.
Antonio Conte has made no secret of his desire to improve his squad options and Oxlade-Chamberlain would be capable of playing at wing-back or in any position across the midfield.
Liverpool have also been touted as a potential candidate to sign the former Southampton midfielder.
Former Manchester City and Newcastle United goalkeeper Given believes Oxlade-Chamberlain will be tempted to move to the defending Premier League champions.
“I know Chelsea are thought to be interested in Oxlade-Chamberlain. He wouldn’t have to move home, and he’d be going to the champions as well. He’d be tempted by that,” Given told Sky Sports News on Thursday morning.
“If a manger signs you for a new club, then you’re very much going to play. He hasn’t had enough game-time at Arsenal over the last number of years.”
Arsenal lost 1-0 to Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium last weekend following Jese Rodriguez’s second-half winner.
The Gunners finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last term.
