The Premier League champions made the interesting decision to sell Serbia international Nemanja Matic in a £40m deal to bitter title rivals Manchester United last week.
The Blues continue to be linked with a move to sign Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater and Inter Milan winger Antonio Candreva.
Speaking at his pre-match media conference ahead of their clash against Arsenal in the Community Shield on Sunday afternoon, Conte said:
“Now for us it’s very important to try to improve our squad – in the numerical aspect – we have a small squad.
“I think only one player is not enough to improve our team, we need more players.”
Chelsea lost 2-1 to Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley to miss out on the double following their title success.
