Chelsea will have to pay £40m to sign Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater, Kaveh Solhekol has claimed.

The Premier League champions are looking to sign the England international from the 2016 champions before the close of the summer transfer window.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte signed Monaco defensive midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko in a £40m deal from Ligue 1 champions AS Monaco last month.

The Blues, though, made the controversial decision to sell Serbia international Nemanja Matic in a £40m transfer to direct title rivals Manchester United.

The west London side have been linked with a number of midfield targets since Matic’s departure as Conte looks to add more depth to his Chelsea squad ahead of a return to the Champions League.

Drinkwater has been linked with a move to the defending champions but Chelsea have been unable to agree a fee with Leicester despite making an offer for the 27-year-old.

Sky Sports News reporter Solhekol revealed Drinkwater wants to move to the Premier League title holders but Chelsea will have to cough up £40m to land the Leicester star.

“What about players who could be coming into Chelsea? This is a story we told you about right at the start of this month,” Solhekol told Sky Sports News on Thursday morning.

“Chelsea want to sign Danny Drinkwater from Leicester. But agreeing on a price is a big problem here. Leicester are under absolutely no pressure to sell.

“We’re told Drinkwater is keen to move but any potential deal would have to be worth about £40m for it to happen.”

Chelsea finished seven points clear of their closest rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League title race last season.

Fact file: Danny Drinkwater

Danny Drinkwater started his career at Manchester United but never made a senior appearance for the 20-time English champions.

The 27-year-old spent loan spells at Huddersfield Town, Barnsley, Watford and Cardiff City before moving to Leicester City.

Drinkwater won the Premier League title in his fifth season with the Foxes and contributed two goals to their title-winning campaign.

His club performances earned the tenacious midfielder a call-up to the England national team in 2016.
