Chelsea want to sign proven 27-year-old for less than £40m, reveals journalist
Sky Sports News reporter Kaveh Solhekol claims Chelsea are hoping to sign Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater for less than £40m
Chelsea want to sign Danny Drinkwater for less than Leicester City’s £40m valuation, Kaveh Solhekol has claimed.
The defending champions are looking to sign the 27-year-old to improve his midfield options following a number of high-profile exits this summer.
Serbia international Nemanja Matic completed a £40m move to Chelsea’s title rivals Manchester United to provide Jose Mourinho with one of his final puzzle pieces.
Chelsea have also allowed Nathaniel Chabolah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to leave in the summer transfer window to leave Antonio Conte’s team lacking options in the middle of the park.
Drinkwater was part of the Leicester City team that won the Premier League title in 2015-16 under Claudio Ranieri.
However, Sky Sports News reporter Solhekol confirmed that Chelsea are in the market to sign the former Manchester United midfielder.
“Staying at Chelsea, and they’re getting closer to a deal for Danny Drinkwater from Leicester City,” Solhekol told Sky Sports News on Tuesday morning.
“Leicester value him at £40m and Chelsea are trying to get him for less than that.
“The player is keeping his head down but he does want to move and wants Champions League football.”
Chelsea have signed Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero, AS Roma defender Antonio Rudiger, Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko and Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata in the summer.
The west London outfit were 2-0 winners against Everton on Sunday to help the defending champions register back-to-back Premier League victories.
The Blues won the Premier League title with two games to spare last season to win the top-flight crown in Conte’s first season in charge.
