Chelsea told 27-year-old midfielder would be ‘fantastic signing’
ESPN FC pundit Paul Mariner believes Danny Drinkwater would be a fantastic addition to the Chelsea team
Danny Drinkwater would be a great signing for Premier League champions Chelsea, according to Paul Mariner.
The Blues sold Serbia international Nemanja Matic to Manchester United in a £40m deal last Monday to leave Tiemoue Bakayoko, Cesc Fabregas and N’Golo Kante as their recognised midfielders.
Chelsea have been linked with a move to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Renato Sanches over the past week or so, although Antonio Conte could struggle to satisfy the teenager’s desire for first-team football.
Drinkwater has been named as a surprise target for the defending champions over the past couple of days despite a difficult 2016-17 campaign for Leicester and the England midfielder.
The 27-year-old was a key part of the Leicester team that won the Premier League title in 2015-16 under Claudio Ranieri thanks to a return of two goals and seven assists in 35 appearances.
Speaking to ESPN FC about whether Drinkwater would be a good signing for the Premier League champions this summer, former Arsenal striker Mariner said:
“If Chelsea get him it’s a fantastic signing. Matic has gone, as you say. Drinkwater is key to Leicester.
“I think this would be a fantastic rumour. You know what you get with Drinkwater.”
Chelsea won the Premier League title with two games to spare last season thanks to a 1-0 win at West Brom.
The Blues, who lost to Arsenal on penalties in the Community Shield on Sunday, will start the defence of their top-flight crown with a home clash against Burnley next weekend.
