Ian Wright questions why Chelsea want to sign 27-year-old
The Arsenal legend questions why Chelsea want to sign Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater
Ian Wright has admitted that he doesn’t understand why Chelsea would want to sign Danny Drinkwater.
The Premier League champions have been heavily linked with a move to sign the England international from Leicester City in the summer transfer window.
Chelsea made the bizarre decision to sell Serbia international Nemanja Matic to title rivals Manchester United in a £40m deal last week.
Antonio Conte must now find a replacement to fill Matic’s void in the Chelsea team with the new Premier League season set to get underway at the weekend.
Drinkwater was a key part of Claudio Ranieir’s Leicester side that shocked the Premier League with their title success in 2014-15.
The England star struck up an impressive midfield partnership with N’Golo Kante before the France international completed a £30m move to Chelsea last summer.
Indeed, some reports have suggested that Chelsea wanted to sign both Drinkwater and Kante in 2016 but prioritised landing the Frenchman.
However, former Arsenal legend Wright questioned why Chelsea would want to sign Drinkwater.
“Danny Drinkwater is a strange one. Is that because Kante is so good it doesn’t matter who plays next to him?” Wright told BBC Radio 5 Live.
Chelsea signed Manchester City reserve goalkeeper Willy Caballero, AS Roma defender Antonio Rudiger, Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko and Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata.
The Blues will start the defence of their Premier League crown with a home clash against Burnley on Saturday afternoon.
