Pat Nevin sends message to Chelsea fans about Nathan Ake
The former Chelsea winger believes Antonio Conte should have kept Nathan Ake
Pat Nevin has criticised Chelsea’s decision to sell Nathan Ake to Bournemouth.
The Netherlands international went out on loan to the Cherries last season and impressed after he scored two goals in 10 appearances in the Premier League.
However, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte decided to recall Ake from his loan spell to help the west London side to get over the line in the title race.
But Ake still found his first-team opportunities limited as he made a mere two appearances in the second half of the 2016-17 season despite impressing at Bournemouth.
Chelsea sold Ake to Bournemouth in a £20m deal in the 2017 summer transfer window, while club captain John Terry and Kurt Zouma left the west London club.
Former Blues winger Nevin questioned the logic behind getting rid of the versatile Netherlands Under-21 international given Ake’s ability to play in a number of positions.
“They should have kept Nathan Ake,” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk on Monday night.
“He is three players. He can play at full-back, centre-half and in midfield. He can cover you all over the place.”
Chelsea suffered a 3-2 loss to Burnley on Saturday afternoon as Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas were sent off in their Premier League opener.
The Blues will make the trip to their title rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley in their next Premier League fixture on Sunday.
The west London side have signed Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Alvaro Morata this summer.
