Neville sends ‘horrendous’ message to Chelsea about new Man United signing
Phil Neville can't understand Chelsea's 'horrendous' decision to sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United
Phil Neville has criticised Chelsea’s “horrendous” decision to sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United.
The Premier League champions decided to sell Matic to their direct title rivals Manchester United in a £40m deal last week.
Matic was part of Jose Mourinho’s side that won the Premier League crown and the EFL Cup in the 2014-15 season following his £21m switch from Benfica.
The Serbia international played a key role in the Chelsea team that won the top-flight title with two games to spare in Antonio Conte’s first season last term.
Chelsea signed Tiemoue Bakayoko in a £40m deal from Ligue 1 champions AS Monaco to provide greater competition for places in midfield.
However, the English champions are looking short on options in midfield following Matic’s controversial move to Manchester United.
Former Manchester United defender Neville didn’t hold back in his criticism of Chelsea for their decision to sell an important player to their title rivals.
“It amazes me, why would you sell Matic to Manchester United?” Neville told Sky Sports.
“You are not only improving United in defensive midfield, you are making Pogba better, [Ander] Herrera better. It is a horrendous sale.”
Matic was one of Manchester United’s best players in an otherwise disappointing 2-1 loss to La Liga giants Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup.
The Red Devils have also signed Everton striker Romelu Lukaku and Benfica defender Victor Lindelof in the summer transfer window so far.
