Paul Scholes sends message to Chelsea fans about Man United signing
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes questions Chelsea's decision to sell Nemanja Matic
Paul Scholes has questioned why Chelsea decided to sell Nemanja Matic to their direct title rivals Manchester United.
The Serbia international completed a £40m move to Manchester United from the Premier League champions last month as Jose Mourinho successfully bolstered his midfield with a proven winner.
The Portuguese coach signed Matic during his second spell in charge at Stamford Bridge and the holding midfielder won the Premier League title in his first full season back at Chelsea.
The 29-year-old played a key role in Chelsea’s title success under Mourinho’s permanent replacement Antonio Conte last season after he finished up with two goals and seven assists.
The Premier League champions signed Tiemoue Bakayoko in a £40m deal from Ligue 1 champions AS Monaco last month to improve their midfield options before Chelsea sold Matic to their direct title rivals.
Manchester United legend Scholes admitted that he was surprised by Chelsea’s decision to sell Matic, adding that Mourinho has recruited a great signing to replace Michael Carrick long-term.
“I really like the Matic signing, that was the one that surprised me a little bit,” Scholes told BT Sport.
“It makes you wonder ‘why did Chelsea sell him?’ I think he brings aggression to United’s midfield, which is something they have been lacking.”
Manchester United lost 2-1 to Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup on Tuesday night after Romelu Lukaku’s effort could only halve the deficit following goals from Casemiro and Isco.
The Red Devils have signed Swedish defender Victor Lindelof, Everton striker Lukaku and Chelsea star Matic in the summer transfer window so far.
