Steve McManaman: This is the signing Chelsea must make
Liverpool legend Steve McManaman says Chelsea need to sign another striker in the summer transfer window
Steve McManaman says Chelsea need to sign a centre-forward to add more depth to Antonio Conte’s squad.
The west London side won the Premier League title with two games to spare last season thanks to impressive performances from Diego Costa and Eden Hazard.
Chelsea have signed four players in the summer transfer window as Antonio Conte looks to improve his squad ahead of a return to the Champions League this season.
The Blues have added Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero, AS Roma defender Antonio Rudiger, Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko and Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata to their team.
Costa is being tipped to leave Chelsea this summer despite the Spain international’s vital role in Conte’s team in his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea lost to bitter rivals Arsenal on penalties in the Community Shield on Sunday afternoon after Sead Kolasinac cancelled out Victor Moses’ opener at Wembley.
Speaking to BT Sport about what signings Chelsea need to make before the close of the summer transfer window, former Liverpool midfielder McManaman said:
“I still think they need a centre-forward.
“Diego Costa is going to leave, and I don’t think Morata or Batshuayi are good enough or strong enough for the Premier League and the Champions League.
“Everything was brilliant last year but it was always about the league. They need to strengthen and they need to strengthen quickly.”
Chelsea will start the defence of their Premier League crown with a home clash against Sean Dyche’s Burnley side at Stamford Bridge next Saturday afternoon.
