Chelsea won’t pay asking price for 23-year-old attacker, claims insider
Daily Telegraph reporter Jason Burt reveals Chelsea won't match Everton's asking price for Ross Barkley
Chelsea are refusing to meet Everton’s £35m asking price for Ross Barkley, according to reporter Jason Burt.
The Premier League champions have been heavily linked with a move to sign the England international in the summer transfer window after Ronald Koeman confirmed the playmaker won’t be signing a new deal.
Barkley is thought to be a target for Tottenham Hotspur as Mauricio Pochettino looks to secure his first summer signing to build on their second-place finish in the Premier League last term.
The 23-year-old would provide greater competition for places in Antonio Conte’s team as Chelsea look to retain their Premier League crown under the Italian.
Chelsea lost 3-2 to Burnley in their opening Premier League fixture of the new season to cast doubt on their ability to defend their title.
Daily Telegraph reporter Burt revealed that Chelsea are still interested in signing the England star, although Tottenham’s interest is more concrete in Barkley.
“He is stuck in limbo. We know there has been interest from Tottenham,” Burt told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“We know there has been less strong interest from Chelsea.
“Nobody is going to pay the fee [£35m] that Everton are demanding for him. They’re going to have to compromise if they’re going to sell him this summer.”
Chelsea won the Premier League title with two games to spare last season after finishing seven points clear of Spurs.
The Blues have signed Willy Caballero, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Antonio Rudiger and Alvaro Morata in the summer transfer window so far.
