Pat Nevin tips Chelsea to make three world-class signings
The former Chelsea midfielder expects Antonio Conte to bring in three more big names before the close of the summer transfer window
Pat Nevin believes Chelsea still need to sign three big-name players before the close of the summer transfer window.
The Blues won the Premier League title with two games to spare last season in Antonio Conte’s first season in charge at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have endured a mixed summer transfer window after missing out on top target Romelu Lukaku after the Belgian striker completed a move to Manchester United.
The west London side have signed Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero, Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, Roma defender Antonio Rudiger and Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata.
Chelsea sold Nemanja Matic to Manchester United in a £40m deal earlier this month, while centre-halves Nathan Ake and John Terry are among the six departures at the west London club this summer.
Former Blues winger Nevin admits the Premier League champions are still three players short in the summer transfer window.
“Chelsea need more cover. Chelsea are two or three players light. They need at least three big-name players,” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“They have spent £150m but they have got a lot of money in. They made a lot of money last season. They have a lot of money to spend.
“It’s just about getting it right. If they got Van Dijk and a central midfielder, they’d look alright.”
Chelsea will start the defence of their Premier League crown with a home clash against Sean Dyche’s Burnley side on Saturday afternoon.
The Blues finished seven points clear of their closest title rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League table last term.
The defending champions lost to Arsenal on penalties in the Community Shield last weekend.
