Marcel Desailly sends message to Antonio Conte about new Chelsea signings
Marcel Desailly warns that Chelsea still need to bring in a number of new players this summer
Marcel Desailly has warned Antonio Conte that Chelsea will need to bring in some more attacking talent this summer to cope with the extra workload of playing in the Champions League.
The Blues were the Premier League’s top performing team last season as they won the title in Conte’s first campaign in charge at the club, claiming a record 30 victories in the process.
However, Chelsea did not have the distraction of European football last term as they focused purely on domestic affairs.
Chelsea must now prepare for a return to the Champions League from September as they look to fight for trophies on four fronts in Conte’s second campaign in charge.
The west London side have already brought in Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Alvaro Morata so far this summer.
However, former Blues star Desailly feels that the champions are still in need of significant reinforcements ahead of the new Premier League season.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Desailly said: “Conte knows exactly what is needed to cope with the extra games. Chelsea will be in excellent shape. I am sure about that.
“There is one reason why Chelsea won the Premier League last season… they were the best team. It had nothing to do with not playing in Europe.
“They now have a new quality striker in Alvaro Morata and I am certain Conte will bring in more. He needs to – and I am sure he will do.”
Chelsea kick off their Premier League campaign with a home clash against Burnley at Stamford Bridge this weekend, with the Blues having lost the Community Shield on penalties to Arsenal on Sunday.
