Frank Lampard tells Chelsea to make two signings in key positions
The Chelsea legend believes Antonio Conte still needs to sign a midfielder and a wing-back in the summer transfer window
Frank Lampard believes Chelsea need to sign another midfielder to ease the workload on Cesc Fabregas.
The Premier League champions lost on penalties to bitter rivals Arsenal in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
Chelsea wing-back Victor Moses broke the deadlock in the 46th minute with a close-range finish before Arsenal signing Sead Kolasinac levelled with 12 minutes to go.
Thibaut Courtois and Alvaro Morata missed their spot-kicks in the penalty shootout to hand the Community Shield to the north London side.
Chelsea started with N’Golo Kante and Fabregas in midfield for the Wembley clash in the absence of Tiemoue Bakayoko.
The new Blues signing is still recovering from a knee operation, while Chelsea sold Nemanja Matic to Manchester United in a £40m deal last week.
Chelsea’s record goal-scorer Lampard believes Conte needs to sign another midfielder as well as cover at wing-back before transfer deadline day.
“I think they need another midfield player,” Lampard told BT Sport.
“They’re waiting on Bakayoko to be fit and it’s a lot to ask of Cesc Fabregas. And they need cover at wing-back.”
Chelsea won the Premier League title with two games to spare last season in Conte’s first campaign in charge of the west London club.
The Blues have signed Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero, AS Roma defender Antonio Rudiger, Monaco midfielder Bakayoko and Real Madrid striker Morata so far this summer.
