Manager delivers latest update on Eden Hazard situation ahead of Chelsea v Everton
Roberto Martinez says the next few days will be "crucial" in determining Eden Hazard's fitness situation
Roberto Martinez says that Eden Hazard is not yet “100 per cent” fit as the Belgium manager ponders calling him up for international duty.
The Chelsea playmaker has been out of action since the start of the summer after having suffered a broken ankle while on international duty with Belgium.
Hazard had to undergo surgery to correct the problem and has been working with Chelsea’s medical team over the summer to get himself fully fit again.
The 26-year-old has sat out both of Chelsea’s first two Premier League games of the season and it remains to be seen exactly when the midfielder will make his return for the Blues.
Now, however, Belgium boss Martinez has suggested that Hazard could be in contention to be called up for the forthcoming international break.
Martinez told Voetbalkrant when asked about Hazard’s fitness: “He isn’t 100 per cent fit yet. The next two days will be crucial.”
Belgium play Gibraltar on 31 August, before taking on Greece on 3 September.
Chelsea picked up their first Premier League points of the season without Hazard on Sunday when they were 2-1 winners over Tottenham at Wembley.
The west London side are now preparing to welcome Everton to Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon, although it remains unclear whether Hazard could be involved for that game.
Chelsea are aiming to defend their Premier League title this season after their impressive triumph last term.
