Jamie Carragher explains the difference between Arsenal and Chelsea
The Liverpool legend explains why Chelsea have enjoyed more success than Arsenal in recent seasons
Jamie Carragher believes the difference between Arsenal and Chelsea is the champions’ superior mentality.
The Blues won the Premier League title in their first season under Antonio Conte, lifting the top-flight crown with two games to spare in the 2016-17 campaign.
Arsenal, on the other hand, finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a Champions League spot.
The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when Thierry Henry, Robert Pires and Patrick Vieira led the north London club to an unbeaten season.
Chelsea have won the Premier League title five times since Arsenal’s last top-flight crown, despite their conveyer belt of managers.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher believes Arsenal haven’t been able to breed the same winning mentality as the Chelsea camp despite Arsene Wenger’s experience.
“Arsenal are a great club with the way they’re run and their values,” Carragher told The Debate on Sky Sports.
“I think everyone looks up to Arsenal in some ways as a club. But that mentality, I’ve said it for so long…
“The difference between [Arsenal] and Chelsea… there are things about Chelsea that I don’t like but the difference in mentality at that club to Arsenal is why Chelsea have dominated the league under Roman Abramovich.
“It’s not just about money. It’s that ruthlessness going through the club where second isn’t good enough, let alone the top four.”
Arsenal won the FA Cup final in May thanks to a 2-1 win against Premier League champions Chelsea at Wembley.
The Gunners were also winners against Chelsea last weekend thanks to a penalty shootout victory in the Community Shield.
