Jamie Carragher makes prediction about Philippe Coutinho’s Liverpool future
Jamie Carragher believes that Philippe Coutinho will stay at Liverpool for at least another season
Jamie Carragher is hoping that Philippe Coutinho will stay at Liverpool for at least another season.
The 25-year-old’s future has been a relentless source of speculation this summer amid claims that Barcelona are keen on bringing him to Camp Nou from Anfield.
There is yet to be any official confirmation of Barcelona’s interest in the Brazilian but recent reports have suggested that the Reds have already turned down a bid from the Spanish club.
The ball is very much in Liverpool’s court, however, with Coutinho having only just signed a new five-year contract with the Merseyside outfit back in January.
And former Liverpool defender Carragher is hoping that the Reds will be able to convince Coutinho to stay at Anfield for at least another 12 months.
Speaking in an interview with 5times.co.uk, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo, Carragher said: “Hopefully we can get 12 more months out of him. When he signed his five-year deal, I didn’t think that he would see it out.
“There is no doubt that at one stage in his career Philippe will want to play for one of the Spanish giants as many of the South American players do. Barcelona and Real Madrid are seen as the two biggest teams in world football who always have the best players.
“I think that Liverpool fans should really enjoy him over the next 12 months as if a big money offer does come in at the end of next season and if the player wants to play for Barcelona then there is not really much Liverpool can do.
“Let’s just hope we see him in a Liverpool shirt next season, which I think we will, and then let’s see where things go from there.”
Liverpool will be hoping that Coutinho stays on at the club after the Reds secured a return to the Champions League for next season following their fourth-placed finish last term.
