The Germany international was in fine form during the week after the 23-year-old midfiedler scored twice in Liverpool’s 4-2 win against Hoffenheim to book the Merseyside outfit’s place in the Champions League group stage.
Can didn’t get on the score sheet on Sunday afternoon but the versatile midfielder helped Liverpool to win the battle in the middle of the park with help from Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum.
Liverpool broke the deadlock thanks to Roberto Firmino’s header before Sadio Mane extended the home side’s lead with a superb solo goal.
Mohamed Salah capitalised on some poor defending from Hector Bellerin to score Liverpool’s third goal before Daniel Sturridge’s late header sealed three points.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher lavished praise on Can after the German midfielder’s excellent performance.
“He was outstanding. They’ll be a lot of talk about the front three of Liverpool, and rightly so. But Liverpool were in the market for a midfield player this summer,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“Can played like that player today – a £60m or £70m midfielder. He has a contract dispute at the moment. Hopefully that gets sorted out. There’s been talk of players coming in at Liverpool, but more importantly they need to keep players. Yes, Coutinho, but he [Can] is another one.”
Can has entered the final 12 months of his Liverpool contract with talks ongoing about a contract extension amid speculation linking the midfielder with a move to Juventus.
Liverpool hoisted themselves up to second place in the Premier League table thanks to their 4-0 win against Arsenal ahead of their trip to Manchester City next month.
