Mark Lawrenson states his prediction for Liverpool v Crystal Palace
The former Liverpool defender is backing Jurgen Klopp's side to beat Crystal Palace and record their first victory over the new league season
Mark Lawrenson is tipping Liverpool to ease to a comfortable win against Crystal Palace in their first game at Anfield this season.
The Merseyside outfit squandered the chance to secure three points in their Premier League opener last weekend after Miguel Britos netted an added-time equaliser.
Liverpool were impressive going forward as new signing Mohamed Salah scored on his debut following efforts from Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and James Milner scored in Liverpool’s 2-1 win against Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim in the first leg of their Champions League playoff in Germany last week.
Palace were surprise 2-1 winners against Liverpool at Anfield last season to extend their surprise winning run at the historic ground to three games.
However, Frank de Boer’s side lost 3-0 to promoted side Huddersfield Town at Selhurst Park last weekend to make a disappointing start under their new Dutch coach.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson is backing the Reds to keep a clean sheet in a victory over Palace, who will be without Ivory Coast international Wilfried Zaha.
“Palace forward Wilfried Zaha is now out injured for a month too, and this feels like a good time for Liverpool to play them,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“That is why I am backing the Reds to win – although I am tipping them to keep a clean sheet, which is quite a big shout at the moment.”
Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season to secure a return to the Champions League.
The Reds will host Hoffenheim in the return leg of their Champions League playoff at Anfield next week.
