Martin Keown names the key Liverpool player under Jurgen Klopp
The Arsenal legend believes Sadio Mane holds the key to Liverpool's potential success in the 2017-18 season
Sadio Mane holds the key to Liverpool’s prospects in the 2017-18 season, according to Martin Keown.
Liverpool have signed three players in the summer transfer window so far, missing out on top targets Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita with less than three weeks before transfer deadline day.
The Reds spent a club-record £39m fee on AS Roma’s Egypt winger Mohamed Salah, while Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke and Hull City defender Andy Robertson have also moved to Anfield.
Salah will be tasked with forging an exciting partnership with Liverpool’s attacking trio of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Mane this term.
The Senegal international was a revelation after the 24-year-old moved to Liverpool from Southampton in a 30m deal last summer.
Mane scored 13 times and made five assists to finish as the club’s joint top-scorer Coutinho, who is being linked with a move to Barcelona.
Former Arsenal defender Keown believes Mane will be instrumental in Liverpool’s hopes of having a positive season under Klopp.
“The 25-year-old is a special talent who is hard as nails and petrifies defenders with his lightning pace,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“His importance to Liverpool was highlighted by how much they missed him when injured or on international duty last season. They lost just three of the 28 games he started but six of the 19 matches he did not.”
Liverpool played out a 3-3 draw with Watford in their opening Premier League game on Saturday afternoon.
