Ex-defender makes intriguing Liverpool prediction about 27-year-old
John Arne Riise is backing Mamadou Sakho to fight his way back into first-team contention with Liverpool
John Arne Riise has backed Mamadou Sakho to fight his way back into first-team contention at Liverpool this season.
The France international was reported to be available to sign for a transfer fee in the region of £30m this summer.
However, Liverpool haven’t received any interest in the former Paris Saint-Germain defender despite the centre-half impressing during his loan spell at Crystal Palace last term.
Sakho fell out with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp last summer over his lack of discipline during their pre-season tour of the United States before the French star criticised his employers on social media.
The 27-year-old has been in and out of the Liverpool first-team since moving to Anfield in a £16m deal from Ligue 1 giants PSG under Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers in 2013.
Sakho was a first-team regular during Liverpool’s title challenge in 2013-14, while he came into his own during Klopp’s first season in charge of the Merseyside outfit.
Liverpool have been left frustrated in their pursuit of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, although the Netherlands international handed in a transfer request on Monday.
Former Liverpool defender Riise believes Sakho will find a way to fight his way back into Klopp’s first-team plans for the 2017-18 Premier League season.
Riise wrote on Twitter: “My guess is that Sakho will through hard work and commitment turn it all around and play for @LFC this season…”
