Mats Hummels sends message to fans about Liverpool
The Bayern Munich defender wasn't impressed with the Bundesliga champions' performance against Liverpool in the Audi Cup
Mats Hummels has admitted that Bayern Munich’s 3-0 loss to Liverpool in the Audi Cup was the worst game that he has experienced at the Bundesliga champions.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side suffered a humiliating defeat in front of their home supporters at the Allianz Arena as Liverpool laid down a marker ahead of the new season.
The Reds were praised for their impressive attacking performance following goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Daniel Sturridge in the Audi Cup semi-final.
Liverpool could have won by a greater margin following 18 attempts on Bayern’s goal, while Serbian midfielder Marko Grujic had a second-half effort disallowed.
The Merseyside outfit will take on Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim in the Champions League playoff with a place in the group stage up for grabs.
Given Liverpool easily dismissed the German champions in their pre-season friendly, the club’s supporters will be quietly optimistic about their chances of progressing to the next round.
Bayern Munich defender Hummels described the 3-0 loss to Liverpool on Tuesday evening as his worst experience at the Bavarian club since moving from Borussia Dortmund.
“We made it far too easy for Liverpool, and it was the worst game that I had ever experienced at Bayern,” Hummels is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.
Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino will come up against his former club Hoffenheim in the Champions League playoff following his £29m move in 2015.
The Reds will make the trip to Germany to face Hoffenheim on Tuesday 15 August before the return leg at Anfield on 23 August.
