Phil Thompson explains why new Liverpool signing will be huge asset
Liverpool legend Phil Thompson welcomes the addition of Mohamed Salah to Jurgen Klopp's team
Phil Thompson believes Mohamed Salah will be a huge asset to Liverpool.
The Egypt international moved to Liverpool in a £39m deal from Serie A giants AS Roma last month as Jurgen Klopp made the winger the most-expensive signing of his reign so far.
Liverpool have given Salah a second chance to impress in the Premier League after the 24-year-old struggled to make an impression at Chelsea following his £11m move in January 2014.
The Blues sent Salah out on loan to Fiorentina and then Roma before the forward completed a permanent switch to the Italian capital in the 2016 summer transfer window.
The African star has already made quite the impression during pre-season, including his double in Liverpool’s 3-0 win against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the Audi Cup.
Salah will introduce more pace to the Liverpool team and allow Klopp to rely less on Sadio Mane in the 2017-18 season.
Indeed, Liverpool’s performances tailed off in the second half of the season in the absence of Senegal international due to the Africa Cup of Nations and then injury.
But former Liverpool captain Thompson is confident that Salah can provide cover for Mane and give Klopp more options in Liverpool’s attack.
“Salah is the one for me,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“To have Sadio Mane on one wing and Salah on the other, to have such pace in the side and two players who can go past players in the box is such an asset.
“Our title challenge failed when Mane was missing and I think Salah will be really interesting because he’s got great pace and makes intelligent runs in behind. He will be a huge asset.”
